Teaching

My scholarship and teaching are intertwined. Being a first-gen scholar, I have struggled to assert my voice and to feel included inside any academic setting. Consequently, I am committed to making the academy accessible to all – and to making it an active agent in social transformation. Both my teaching and scholarship are anchored in the inclusion of underrepresented voices in the historical record as well as in the classroom. Much like those that struggled to be remembered in the historical archive, those that attended improvised night schools, and those self-educated individuals that I study in my scholarship, the pillars of my pedagogical philosophy are accessibility, inclusion, and social transformation. Indeed, as a teacher I strive to equip students with the necessary intellectual tools for them to question what constitutes knowledge and to create intellectual frameworks mindful of those that have been silenced by history. This, in turn, allows students to move beyond ideas of equality towards dismantling inequality.
